While this is a new book review since it's been a minute, this book is far from new. In fact, it's considered a classic. Many of you have heard of John Steinbeck. Steinbeck has crafted beautiful masterpieces of stories, including Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men. However, this particular title is less known. I've heard about it most of my life (specifically in Matilda because Matilda Wormwood comes to love it so much). Anyway, I'm rambling (something I do best- HA), but I recently read one of Steinbeck's "underdogs" titled The Red Pony, and I'm in love!
Not only does The Red Pony contain all those warm, cozy elements, characters, and a simple plot that draws readers in, it's one of those rare gems of books that teaches us about life. Specifically, it's a coming-of-age story, as 10-year-old Jody learns about both the beauty and harsh reality of life. Jody lives on a simple valley farm with his mother, father, and best friend and confidante, ranch-hand Billy Buck. One day, Billy and Carl, Jody's father, bring home a beautiful, young, red colt for Jody to raise and care for. As time goes on, Jody faces a lot of learning opportunities, some good and some tragic, as readers slowly begin to witness the slow transition from a boy to young man. Steinbeck's style of writing brilliantly captures most elements of nature and humanity, laced with symbolism and metaphorical references about life, specifically in the early west.
After reading this title, I was both shocked at how much I enjoyed it and how long I have waited to pick it up and read it. As the old saying goes, "Don't judge a book by its cover." If you're like me and on a kick of reading (and re-reading) older titles, especially classics, give this one a try. It will make you laugh and cry. We definitely need more books like these, especially in today's chaotic world. Have a great weekend, everyone! Love, Amy
